Faith in Fiordland

A new tourism venture is due to launch soon on Lake Te Anau. George Garden has taken Faith in Fiordland through some of its final lake trials and is now just waiting for the final paperwork before beginning cruises on Lake Te Anau.

The idea came about because of visitor feedback saying that they wanted to cruise on the lake but didn't necessarily want to go the glowworm caves. It's obviously been a labour of love getting Faith transferred to Te Anau. The boat was designed by the great Albert Mylne of Glasgow in 1935 and gradually made her way to the southern hemisphere. Made of teak and mahogany she has undergone a complete upgrade to restore her to her former glory ready for passengers. She can take up to 22 passenger although George thinks that 18 will be the maximum he will take for comfort and ease of getting around the boat. Rwanda with Robynne

Robynne Peacock gave an interesting talk on her recent visit to Rwanda at the meeting last Thursday. A land-locked East African country it is now best known for its mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. Others will remember it for the mass genocide of Tutsis by the Hutus in 1994 where it is estimated between 500,000 and 1 million people died.

With major exports of tea and coffee plus an emerging tourism market, Robynne shared her experiences of visiting the mountain gorillas which can require up to a 4.5 hour trek depending on where the gorilla group is in the forest. Scouts will go out early in the morning to locate the gorillas and then report back. With so few gorillas remaining only a certain number of tracking permits are issued each day to help minimise the impact of humans. It certainly sounded like a fascinating experience in a country that Robynne confirmed she felt very safe in while she was there.

Blood Pressure Awareness

Great support from Rotary volunteers at the Blood Pressure awareness day outside Four Square. Doesn't look to be too much wrong with the blood pressure of these chaps!
