Judy Matthews
A partners’ night got off to a good start with Judy Matthews our guest speaker, having a quiz distributed to each person/ couple. This quiz was based on gardening, plants, and flowers and was a good conversation trigger at the tables!  Judy later gave us a stroll down memory lane with the history of the local flower shows, which are well supported in the area. Judy also gave an interesting insight into numbers of entries and future plans. These shows are in good heart, with people like Judy in charge- being so enthusiastic. At the end of Judys’ talk, of course being the competitive Rotarians that we are, we wanted the quiz answers. Whilst there were no proven actual winners, Judy drew the entries out of a bucket and some lucky people won an entry to the next flower show – a pot, instructions and bulbs to plant! These will be checked up on and are expected as entries in September! A worry given the two least successful potato growers won some bulbs!! Mark Dowling thanked the speaker and carried on with a resume of Judy’s life. So interesting. From being Head Girl of the boarding Hostel at Rangi Ruru, playing First 11 hockey for Rangi in the third form, to owning two successful florist shops in Riccarton Road, to meeting Tony while playing tennis for Greendale B, to raising four wonderful children, Judy is a hardworking, never waste a minute special person and so so deserving of a PAUL HARRIS FELLOWSHIP. Huge congratulations to Judy. President Doug had great pleasure in awarding this to Judy.
Scout Den Visit
An out night visit to the Scout Den. A beautiful evening, enthusiastic Scouts, Leaders and parent helpers, and a delicious smell of food and outdoor fire smoke, wafting around,  set the tone for a wonderful evening. Every Rotarian there just had to be so proud that we had supported generously the building project of this amazing, well utilized Scout Den. The meal was superb, all set out with flowers on each table. 34 members and partners were treated to a feast--- and we got a delicious dessert. From the welcome speeches to the many outdoor activites, this was a well organized, fun evening, which will be a highlight of our year. Some Rotarians are better at cooking damper than others!! A great out night. Thank you Scouts.
Fiordland Marine Search and Rescue
Local people Chris Hughes – not our one – and Brendon Soper spoke to us about their progress with the work they have done in setting up something similar to LandSAR – search and rescue, but involving water. Apparently the whole Fiordland Coast from where the Riverton Coast Guard finishes, had been unmonitored until now. This team is doing an amazing job, including many hours of swimming long distance practice to jumping from helicopters to general fitness and training work. We wish them well as they become even more established and know their enthusiasm and skills will be appreciated many times rescuing, in the future. They have already had several call outs.
