Director's meeting - Key Points
  • We have two new prospective members Lynley Jones and Cheryl Ralley who are keen to join. Craig also has names of two others who have been invited to attend.
  • Phone book sales have been very good. Please help us by selling 10 if you haven’t already done so.
  • We are organising RYE exchange people from Tasmania in May. At this stage we are looking for Rotarians to host them for three nights, some to accompany them either biking, walking or to Milford Sound and others to have them for an evening meal. They may also need pick-ups and a ride to the airport on the Sunday. If you can help with any of these tasks and to spread the load that would be really great thank you.
  • We passed an application to sponsor Forrest Wilson for half the funds he needs to go on a Aotearoa Youth Delegation - $335.
  • The Te Anau Bird Park has requested some more funding for gates $1000.00. It was decided that we would do the projects we are committed to first and then fund their request if expenses permit.
  • We are ordering High Vis tops to wear when we are doing any Rotary work so as we are visible representation of Rotary in the community.
  • We spent time discussing options for the ongoing Roadside Project which to date has no solution. Time and money are running out for this commitment and a letter is being constructed to be sent to the SDC/TACB for discussion and their support to again approach Transit for signage, so as we can advertise for a corporate annual sponsor.
  • We need to undertake some work around creating a Risk Management plan which can be implemented when we do projects in the Community.
  • The problem of Canada Geese was also discussed.
  • We accepted Mary Climo’s resignation with regret and thanked her for her work as a Rotarian over past years, including her year as President and her work on the bulletin this past year. We hope she enjoys more time travelling, socialising and promoting business interests with Nigel. We know too that she will lend a hand when her expertise is called for and remain a ‘Friend of Rotary’.
  • Harry Macnamara was our Trade Grant recipient. He is undertaking an electrical apprenticeship with Blair Sutherland.
  • The validity of the Trade Grant criteria needs to be relooked at and probably tidied up so as we have more applicants towards the end of this year.

Forum Feedback
The following is a report given by each committee at our recent Forum evening. These are half yearly reports which tell us where we are up to and where we are heading for the latter half of the Rotary Year. They also update our Annual Strategic Plan.

Special Project

We have done the ground work for our shared project with Invercargill North Rotary Club for the BBQ, Shelter and Cycle Trail Information Boards. At this point we are shifting this project to other members of this committee and the Service Committee. Having said that it will be a project we hope all will be involved with.
We are also asking committee members for signage ideas that would be useful around the Te Anau Basin and in town that can enhance the work Rotary does as well as help with community information and usage of community areas.
We would also like signage on projects we have undertaken in the past such as Frank Fisken’s Garden and the DOC Bird Park.
These all fulfil our obligation to this year’s International Rotary Goal of spreading the work and information of Rotary Clubs.

Membership

The goals for this committee were to increase membership in total by three, establish an Alumni list of past Rotarians on our website and to establish a list of ‘Friends Of Rotary’, publicised on our website. There has been interest from past Rotarians and from members of the public to be involved in working bees and the odd social occasion.
These goals too promote the Rotary recognition in our community and encourage more participation. All of these things have been started and we hope to have further updates from Craig over the next few months.
One such way to continue to advertise Rotary within our area could be to host an event for past Rotarians and ‘Friends of Rotary”

Service Committee

This committee has been responsible for finishing last year’s Bird Park project, organising a very successful New Year’s Eve, Roadside Rubbish Project and the ongoing maintenance of the Roadside Beautification Project.
They have recommended the purchase of high vis vests to be worn when Rotarians are working in the community.
They have worked on the Excell seat, and are planning a Cemetery Gate tidy up, working bees on the BBQ/Shelter construction soon and a firewood project to help and benefit from a corporate entity [RJ’s] in our area.

Club Administration

We have had very successful social occasions within our club and in the wider Rotary Community over the last six months at least every six weeks. These have included Changeover, trip to Winton Rotary Cycle Trail outing, a show in Invercargill, auction night, Xmas Party, potato competition, Rotary social evening with Invercargill North, Car Rally/Scavenger Hunt and we have our upcoming Central Otago weekend at the end of this month.
After that we have District Conference in April, our fund raiser Corporate Dinner in May [aim to raise $10,000] and Changeover again in June. At both of these events we could send out invitations to past Rotarians, Corporate Friends and ‘Friends of Rotary”.
Suggestions for activities are always welcome and participation in these activities is great for club morale and inspiration.

New Generation

There are a number of activities that we organise, support and are of an ongoing nature such as Trade Grant, Life Education Bus, plus grants for youth in our area to attend conferences, science fairs, sailing leadership adventures and literacy in schools and Rotary sponsored prizes.
We have a student for the Rotary District/National Speech Competition this year and they have instigated Fiordland College Head students to Rotary evenings once a term. This gives them an appreciation of what Rotary does in our community and throughout the world. Undertaking an environmental project with one of our local schools is also worth looking at.

Foundation

We have had a film evening dedicated to raising money for the International Polio Eradication Programme. We have also put up a display in our Public Library to create public awareness of this important International Rotary Project.
A shared District Project Funding Application has been submitted and we hope that a Global Funding application can also be initiated this year.
We have committed to give funding for a teacher in Nepal and this will be taken to the next Director’s meeting.
Ahead this committee is ensuring we meet our target giving to Rotary International $130 p.p. They are also considering a funding project at present such as a “lamb drive’ or something similar.

Public Relations

There are ongoing promotions of Rotary in the Te Anau Trader and at times in the Southland Express.
We would particularly like a Rotarian to step forward and help put our activities, events, photographs and story on Rotary Showcase and set up regular items for Rotary website/Facebook page.

Photographs are an excellent way to publicise Rotary. Please could you all remember to take them, share them, give them to our Public Relations committee who will in turn give them to Steve, or cc both in. This is our easiest and quickest way to show the community what we are up to.

Other Activities

Our Rotary Chip Van has had a successful year.
Our sergeants have been doing a great job as has Shane in the fields of fines, amusement and letting us know what’s been going on undercover.
Steve [Club Historian] has told us a bit of history and as we approach the last few months he may share more and he would be grateful if you in turn shared photos and events with him to record for prosperity!

Our new phonebook has also been a great success after being let down by Telecom. Thanks to Alan and his diligent committee and to Don for assisting with developing the database with us.

We are on target to reach our Rotary Goals for this year. Thank you all for your work to date and what you’re undertaking in the last part of this Rotary year. Together it all becomes possible and with participation we all reap the rewards.

Speaker Reports
Marky Wilson  [7th March]

Marky gave us a very interesting talk on his work with the Nepalese people in Nepal. These people suffered badly after their big earthquake and it is taking time and money to put their infrastructure and economy back on track. He told us how deserving and positive these people are.

Mackenzie Wilson [14th March]

Mackenzie gave us a very enthusiastic account of the 2019 Science Fair she attended in Auckland. She was extremely grateful to the Fiordland Rotary Club for sponsoring her and allowing her to undertake this conference. She said it was life-changing and thanked us very much.
Change over date & Rotary Centenary Project

CHANGEOVER DATE CONFIRMED - 13 JUNE 2019

I have confirmed with Tania Lowry, DGE that she is available for 13 June so lets all put it in our diaries that this is change over date.

The theme for the coming year is:

This aligns very well with Rotary's Vision - "Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change - across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves"

A ROTARY CENTENARY PROJECT
Give Every Child a Future

Information on this was distributed last year about this major international project regarding a vaccination programme to the South Pacific Islands to prevent cervical cancer and save children's lives through the introduction of three vaccines (HPV, rotavirus and pneumococcal disease).  The project was initiated by Rotarians in Australia and New Zealand and is being executed in partnership with UNICEF with whom Rotary has a deep and lasting relationship having worked together on End Polio Now and other projects around the world.

Details of the programme are currently being finalised by UNICEF with each Government.  At this stage we are hoping that the first vaccinations under this programme will take place towards the end of 2019.

More information is available on www.everychildafuture.com as well as a special message from Ian and Juliet Riseley, current President Rotary International https://youtu.be/ehigRWFZ-j4

This is something we will become more involved with in the coming year so watch out for more updates over the coming months.
Howden Hut Food Drop
Members of the Club have completed the two food drops to the Howden Hut, one in great weather which allowed those that wished to do so a side trip to the Key Summit, and one a bit wet. The trampers at the Hut really do appreciate our efforts. Our Club as well as the Milton Rotary Club who organise the trips wish to extend their grateful thanks to all those who participated. This included Lionel and Linley Wason, Ray Willett, Sonja Neilson, Mark Dowling, Brian McCandless, Brian Sheppard, Raymond Donaldson and Abhi, Susie and Pauline who were MJ  Moffat's ring ins. We will receive a donation for our efforts in due course.
Club Duties
The following people have been allocated to duties for the next few weeks.  (Just a friendly reminder that if your job is as ORGANISER, please also remember it is also part of this role to put all the name badges etc away after the weekly meeting!)

Please note that if your name is listed here it is YOUR responsibility to find a replacement for your duty if you are not going to be available. You must also inform Marie if have swapped so that she can be properly prepared for the meeting (027 370 7649).  Please note that this roster has been produced without prior knowledge of any absences. We apologise if you have already put in an apology and will be away - please send an email to Sarah and we will amend the roster accordingly - sarahkay@xtra.co.nz
