Chip Van Back in Action
As advised last week, it is time to get the Chip Van up and running for the coming summer.  A roster will be available at the next few meetings so please put your name down and come along and help out - its always a fun day!

For those new to the Club, we have 4/5 main events each year, starting with the Kepler Challenger 5 Dec, the Santa Parade 12 Dec, the Rodeo 30 Dec and New Years Eve 31 Dec, the its Waitangi Day on 6 Feb.
We have teams of 4 working together at one time - one feeding the vat, one potting chips and wrapping dogs and 2 working on the counter serving customers and taking their money.

We also need members to pop along the morning after and do a clean up - this will be at Don McFarlane's place at 27 Paton Place.

I am the Organiser this year and currently getting the roster filled in and stocking the Van is what I'm up to and then I will be the Runner on each day - so I will provide more supplies as and when needed on the day of the event.

So Kepler Challenger not far away so please pop your name on the roster and come along - even if you've not done it before, the team will completely support and train you up.

Thanks everyone
Jane

Spud in the Bucket
There are only three Rotarians who haven't collected their spuds and buckets.
Ring me if you want them. O21 111 0995
Everyone else.
Get your two spuds planted. Keep them warm and slightly moist in their buckets to get established.
Then outside somewhere in the garden. This year the variety is Ilam Hardy so that is why you will all need a large bucket to contain them in.
If we have a dry summer look after them with a light water now and then, maybe a bit of shade.
We are digging and weighing about
February 25th 2021.
Good luck all.
( PS. If your spuds are not looking too good over the next few months ask Jill for some advice.)
Happy growing
Terry

Rotary Auction 2020
Our famous and fabulous Auction Night will be upon us again on 3rd December. This evening always proves to be a great night out for Rotarians and non-Rotarians, bidder and non-bidders - although bidders are usually helpful!  If you have any friends that enjoy a good night out then invite them along to our Auction Night.

Auction items can be sourced from so many places -your imagination, your workplace, your kitchen, your garden, your back cupboard of unused gifts.  Anything that someone else will buy could benefit our auction so dig deep, invite your friends and family and come long for a fabulous evening of bidding fun.
It would be great if you could bring a friend, so be sure to let President Craig know who you are bringing and if you want to donate something but can't be there on the night be sure to let one of the Directors know.
Our resident auctioneers will be in the house - at least we think they will!
Everyone able to assist with organising please contact Craig.

Duties
Over the next few issues I will be covering the different aspects of the various Club Duties.

Door Duty
Make sure you arrive by 5.45 pm or earlier if possible. Collect the black case from the Managers Office. Have the Visitors‘ Book  open at the correct page.
Register members  as they arrive, recording attendance and the amount paid (if not pre-paid)  and have name tags available. Note whether guests or visitors are paying or non-paying.
All guests to sign Visitors’ Book. Ensure member on ‘Visitor Host’ takes over fellowship.
Guest Speaker to be introduced to member on ‘Guest Introduction‘ duties. Make-Up Cards - All visiting Rotarians are to receive a Make—Up card  (requested or not).
Ask them to fill in their details,  add our Club name,  date and sign it. At the close of the meeting add up meal money  and check total balances with number attending.
Write amount in space provided and sign. Put other monies in allocated bags. The Treasurer will collect the black case.

Visitor Host
Arrive on time. Keep a lookout for guests and visiting Rotarians at the Door Table  and the bar area. Introduce yourself and welcome them to the Rotary Club of  Fiordland.  Assist them with documentation and make sure they sign the Visitors’ Book. Advise them on our meeting format and procedure, where they will  sit and generally what they may expect. Visiting Rotarians need to know the President’s name for their self-introduction. Let the President know of any visitors as the President will also need to know their names. Make sure the Guest Speaker is introduced to the member on ‘Guest Speaker Introduction’ duty and if possible, to the President. Other visitors should be introduced to members with similar classifications for fellowship, and to free you up for possible other guest arrivals. Let the Manager or staff know that there will be additional places to be set up at table and meal numbers increased, if visitors have not previously advised of their attendance  - many do inform us in advance.

We were thrilled when President Craig inducted new member Lloyd Anderson into the Fiordland Rotary Club at our last meeting.
Lloyd is the Manager of Harcourts Real Estate branch here in Te Anau. We welcome Lloyd to our Club and look forward to his company and involvement in our activities.

Service Projects
I have spent a bit of time coming up to speed with the recent history and projects pending and historical.

The water front seat annual inspection and tidy is about to begin with an initial spray with moss killer. Lionel and Jill have put their hands up for this. The spray is supplied by Russell McClean. We will have a team with Buckets brooms and and stiff brushes to follow up a fortnight later. The seats are generally in very good order.

I am awaiting prices for seats and signage, to proceed with the Water Park / Franks Dell  project beside the Trout Viewing setup. The proposed signage will be opposite DOC H.Q and the seat will probably overlook the pond. Most of the ground work for this project was done by Marie. Once the trees are gone I am sure this area will have real potential for further beautification.  A project for a future Director ?

The kids furniture at the Bird Park is in need of a coat of stain as it sits outside. This will be done some summer evening after work and will not  take long. With the bird life in that area what better way to spend an evening ?
An area along the cycle trail surmounted by a memorial garden to Caroline Carter needs some assistance both to restrict unauthorised entry and to form a retaining wall to retain the bank above the track. I am in the process to source suitable timber and materials. If any members would like to add their input to method or design I would be very grateful. Just ring me on 2497368 to arrange a site visit.
We will also need some soil or fill to put against the wall. Perhaps a builder needing to remove some site soil. Please keep an ear to the ground.

The area under the welcome sign where the rotary Logo is displayed on the entrance to town is a mess and is in need of a working bee. This area was planted with the assistance of a RYLA group at the end of their course. I remember that many of them had never planted anything in their lives and how buzzed up they were. I would be sad if they saw it now. I will try to spray the grass that has taken over and then call a working bee to deal with the results

None of the dates that Borland Lodge gave us were suitable or clashed with the operation of the chip van, so It will happen next year.

If any one sees a need or would like suggest other projects that Rotary could or should be involved, please advise me

Regards Doug.
