Hospice Concert Collaboration
REPORT TO LIONS BOARD
PROJECT - Charity concert with Suzanne Prentice for Southland Hospice

Timing - Suzanne has agreed that she is available for Friday 5 April and that she
could also be available for the night of Saturday 6 April if we were very
successful at selling seats. She would not expect any payment if the
Hospice is to get the proceeds but she would expect to be accommodated
for the night of the concert(s). She is holding those dates for us.

Venue - Fiordland Events Centre is booked for 5 April and hold on 6 April as well.
Booking confirmed by Jude Cantwell. No discussion about cost of venue
hire. She did confirm that seating limit for fire purposes is 350 people.
Format - Suzanne has agreed that she would do two sessions of around 25-30
minutes each and that we could add in a local act or acts.
I had a brief discussion with Suzanne about price of seats and she was
happy to leave that to us.

Back-up Act(s) - I have spoken to Jackie Knowles about the Te Anau Ukelele Group being a
support act and she has said that they would be available on 5 April. She
also thought that if the proceeds were going to the Hospice then she would
seek agreement from her group to play FOC.
I also understand that David Pickett is part of a successful group and he
tells me that they once performed in Lower Hut with Suzanne Prentice. He
thought that he could round up several of his group if we wanted another
support act. No commitment made and no discussion on whether they
would be paid.
Sound Systems - Suzanne is going to refer a sound technician from Invercargill to me.
She has worked with him before and he has all of her backing tracks
recorded. No indication of cost but presumably they would not work FOC

Things to do - Broadly speaking to move forward from here we need:

1. Te Anau Lions to confirm this is a goer as a fundraiser for Southland
Hospice with no financial off-take by our club.

2. Lions needs to consider discussing this project as a joint service
clubs effort ASAP. (I have already had an informal discussion with
Brian McCandless about this idea). A joint organising group would
need to be formed and take over from there. I am happy to be part of
that.

3. The organising group then needs to firm up on the acts and the
format

4. The group needs to decide on who would stage manage the event

5. The group would need to decide on seat prices, printing of tickets
and allocation of how the tickets would be sold.

6. The group would need to make an approach to Geoff Thompson
about The Distinction hosting Suzanne and maybe also the sound
people

7. The group would need to decide on what stage setting is necessary.

Presidents Report
We have had a busy start to our rotary year which is set to continue over the next few weeks.
After our opening night we had a fantastic meeting the following week with the combined Lions Clubs with Marg
Hughes presenting on a very worthwhile project in the Suzanne Prentice Hospice fundraiser plan. I am pleased to
report that the directors fully supported this venture as our first combined event and there is a planning meeting this
Wednesday which we will have a report on, on Thursday.

Thursday sees our annual outing to the Bowling Club which will be one of the last on the old rink as the club
prepares to launch into a $400,000 project to install a new all-weather rink. 6.00pm start with cash bar & BBQ.
Congratulations to Brian and his team on this mammoth venture.
The 22 nd of February will be our visit to the residents of the Murchison Villas which will involve a games night with
the residents and us providing dinner via the chip van albeit with a slightly upgraded menu. Dinner cost for this
outing will be $20 for Rotarians and free for the residents.

We will have the pleasure on the 29 th of February of inducting two new members in Bradley Foote and Angela
Monteith and our guest speaker will be our recent Science & Technology recipient, Agustin Cerda-Lopez, Agustin had
a rather rocky time in Auckland which he may share with us.

The Directors have recommended to the Trustees that the following grants be approved:
Harry McGlade: Outward Bound $3,500
Fiordland College: Life Education Bus $450 approx.
Te Anau Waitangi Charitable Trust: Waitangi Day $1,000
Te Anau Bowling Club: New Rink $10,000

I regret to advise that Jane Grant has tendered her resignation from our Rotary Club effective immediately.
This leaves a massive void to fill as our treasurer. There is a proposal that we split the treasurer’s workload into two
separate roles if this would make it more manageable. You will all be aware that the club cannot function without a
treasurer so if you have any suggestions or might be able to assist then please get in touch with me.

On a positive note, Gareth has agreed to take up the reigns again as Foundation Director and we thank him for his
offer.

I look forward to seeing you all in the coming weeks.
Regards Don

Treasurers Report from 8 Feb Meeting
Funding applications were approved at the Directors Meeting on 8 February as follows:

Harry McGlade - Outward Bound - $2500
Waitangi Trust - Performing Artist expenses $1000
Life Education Bus - Approx $500
Te Anau Bowling Club Lawn Project - $10,000

Chip Van

Gross Income for the summer (excluding Waitangi Day) = $25,671
Less Expenses of just under $10,000 and capitalised renovation expenses of $13,255
Leaves a small but healthy net profit for the year of approx $2000.

Well done to everyone who worked and supported the Chip Van over the summer - the new renovations and signage on the van, plus the fabulous weather at every event has contributed to a very successful, financial year.

Foundation/Polio Annual Donation

This month we are contributing $5850 ($150 per member) to Rotary International being our annual commitment to Foundation.

I implore all members to understand that the Club should actively work on District Grants that can bring this money back into our region.  If we don't apply for Grants for Projects then we basically give this money to other Clubs, so we should all be encouraged to come up with ideas to support these annual District and even international grants.

Summary of Trust Money

$37,202.54 on Term Deposit

After this months expenses and donations, approx $16,00 still remains in our Trust cheque account.

Jane Grant Resignation
Sadly I have come to the end of my productive time with the Fiordland Rotary Club.

I have struggled for quite some time now with the politics and structure of the Club and how it works, and having tried my hardest to share my thoughts and opinions over the many years I have served on the Directors committee, it's time for me to have a break and give everyone a rest from my relentless pestering of how I'd like things to change.

My resignation is effective immediately although I will obviously have to continue with a lot of the Treasurers workload until a replacement can be found.  My Rotary membership is paid up until the end of this Club year, ie to 30 June but after that I won't be able to act as Treasurer, in any capacity, because from 1 July I will no longer a member of the Club.

So Don and the Directors are now URGENTLY seeking a replacement Treasurer to step up as soon as possible.  This role is going to split into two positions to make it easier on the next members and split the work load. I am available to provide full training BUT I will be travelling overseas from 1 June for 3 months so I will only be able to provide support until the end of May.

If there is one thing I have consistently enjoyed during my membership of the Club and that is the social side of the Club - that I will definitely miss but I am sure I will see you all around town and out on my Post run, it just won't be at the weekly meetings anymore.

Cheers
Jane

Committee Lists for 2023 - 2024
A new Committee list for the Club has been created, a copy of which put on the Rotary stand at The Club.

We had our first informal meeting of those present last week and some great ideas were discussed and a plan to create a Calendar of Events for the next 12 months is already under way.

So if you have any ideas for meeting speakers, outnights or social events for us to head away to, please talk to either Pete or Jeff.
